Slate Stone or Sandstone – Which Makes a Better Choice for Flooring?

Natural stones are among the most popular construction materials in the world. People love the appearance and sturdiness of natural stones.

Slate and sandstone, both, are natural stones and can be used for building floors, walls, counters, splash backs, and design features in residential and commercial environments. But when you are required to pick one and ditch one, you might feel too confused to take a decision.

This blog will help you select the right material by comparing both these materials based on various factors –

Formation –

Slate is a fine-grained, dense, and solid natural stone composed of clay, volcanic ash, and various natural minerals. The stone forms under extreme pressure and temperature and that is the reason why it extremely dense and solid.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made of sand-sized silicate grains. Due to its very composition, the stone makes a great selection for pavements in outdoors. Though, it can used for indoor areas as well.

Technically, slate is a homogeneous metamorphic rock and sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Former is composed of quartz and chlorite and latter is made of sand or quartz grains.

Color –

The color of slate stone depends mainly on the mineral deposits in its composition. It can be red, yellow, gold, black, slate and gray. Sometimes, a single slate stone can have multiple colors, as our multi-classic slate stone tiles.

Sandstone is available in shades of tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black. The color of the stone is a result of type of sand and impurities in the rock formation.

Sandstone feels rough when you give the tile a close a look.

Density –

Slate is among the densest construction materials. It is hard, solid, and durable and does not crack or get damaged easily.

Sandstone is also solid and long-lasting material, but it is not as dense and durable as slate.

Slate can be used almost any indoor and outdoor purpose, including floors, walls, counters and backsplashes in bathrooms, kitchens, living, bed, dining, and any other area of your home. It can also be used for stair treads.

And sandstone makes a great selection for countertops, accents and many low to medium traffic interior design projects.
